Other Heart Conditions

Normal Heart

There are many potential problems which can occur with a child's heart. Some occur from birth and others develop later. These include rarer forms of congenital heart disease, some of which may be diagnosed before birth by foetal scanning.

Conditions which may develop later include cardiomyopathy, pericarditis, myocarditis and many types of heart rhythm problems. Dr Naqvi has cared for many babies and children with both common and rare heart problems and she will ensure that your child has all the necessary assessments and treatment they need for their particular condition.

Symptoms

Symptoms

Symptoms will vary according to the particular condition. Many children will have no symptoms. Others may become breathless, tire more easily, have slower weight gain and be more prone to respiratory infections. Older children may have reduced exercise tolerance. Some children can appear to have a blue tinge to their lips, tongue and fingernails. They can have reduced oxygen levels (cyanosis).

Diagnosis

Diagnosis

A clinical examination will be performed. Oxygen saturations will be measured. An echocardiogram will usually be performed. An ECG and a Chest X-ray may also be required.

Additional tests such as a MRI or CT scan might be needed depending on the complexity of the condition.

Treatment

Treatment

Treatment will depend on the diagnosis. Some children will require only monitoring in the outpatient clinic. Others may require treatment with medication. Some children will require either keyhole heart treatment or major cardiac surgery. Dr Naqvi works with an excellent team of NICOR audited congenital cardiac surgeons and interventionalists.

Prognosis

Prognosis

The outlook for children with heart disease continues to improve. Dr Naqvi has cared for many babies and children with all types of heart conditions and has followed them up until adulthood.

Dr Naqvi says: "Having a heart condition early in life does not stop children doing well in sports or from having a happy full life. We aim to ensure every child reaches their full potential."
